Bangkok · Topic 008 · Workbook row 13

Bangkok's best sushi choice depends on whether you want inexpensive individual plates, inventive rolls or a chef-led omakase. Sushiro offers the clearest entry-level price control; Isao suits diners who enjoy elaborate fusion rolls; Sushi Masato is the serious counter-meal choice. Compare the actual menu and additional charges, because "sushi dinner" can mean anything from a few hundred baht to several thousand.

This is a practical shortlist based on published menus, restaurant formats and booking conditions, not a claim that every venue has been personally tasted. It also separates casual sushi from sashimi and broader Japanese dining: an expensive bowl of sliced fish is not automatically the experience someone seeking a sushi counter has in mind.

Sushiro: start here when the budget matters most

Sushiro Thailand's menu includes THB40 choices such as cucumber and tuna rolls, alongside THB60 and higher-priced plates. Its central Bangkok branches include Siam Square One, centralwOrld and Samyan Mitrtown, making it relatively easy to fit a meal around an existing sightseeing or shopping route. [1] [2]

The appeal is control. You can order a little, assess how hungry you still are, and then add more. That works better for a light lunch than paying for a large fixed course simply because you are in a city with celebrated Japanese restaurants.

As a worked example, eight THB40 orders would total THB320 before any higher-priced selections or extras. That is not a quoted meal package, and it does not assume that every plate contains the same number of pieces. The calculation is useful precisely because you can replace it with the prices of the dishes you actually choose.

Pay attention to the distinction between a regular menu price and a promotion. Sushiro's Thai announcements include time-specific offers, so a photograph advertising unusually cheap fatty tuna is not a reliable basis for your whole holiday food budget. [3]

For a group, agree whether the goal is a quick meal or a tasting session before ordering. Repeated premium plates, desserts and drinks can make an apparently inexpensive format surprisingly costly. A modest initial order is easier to expand than a table full of food is to undo.

Siam Square One is a sensible choice when you are already in the Siam area. Samyan Mitrtown is useful for a different part of town. There is little reason to cross Bangkok solely to use one central branch rather than another unless a particular branch-specific offering matters to you.

Isao: choose it for creative rolls, not a traditional counter

Isao's Sukhumvit 31 location is documented by Thailand's tourism directory. Its merchant ordering menu shows why it belongs in a different category from a minimalist nigiri restaurant: signature dishes include a sushi sandwich and the Jackie roll, alongside crunchy and richly dressed combinations. [4] [5]

The current merchant listing gives useful price markers: the sushi sandwich is THB495, the Crunchy roll THB440 and Jackie THB594. These are online ordering prices; they should not be silently presented as a guaranteed dine-in bill with identical fees and conditions. [5]

Isao makes sense for diners who actively enjoy that style. Tempura, sauces and layered textures are part of the attraction, not flaws to be judged against an entirely different meal. It is less compelling for someone who mainly wants to compare the rice and individual cuts of fish in a succession of straightforward nigiri.

Sharing also makes the format easier to appreciate. Two people can choose contrasting rolls rather than each committing to a large, similarly flavored order. Balance a rich or crisp preparation with something simpler, and resist ordering every photographed signature dish at once.

Use the menu price to construct a realistic order before deciding that this is a cheap alternative to omakase. Two substantial specialty rolls plus extras can already represent a meaningful restaurant spend. The advantage is freedom of choice and a less formal meal, not necessarily the lowest possible bill.

One practical limitation is that the public tourism directory's displayed hours are inconsistent. The address is useful; those hours are not a sound basis for scheduling a late dinner. Obtain the restaurant's current service time when arranging your visit rather than treating an apparently official directory as infallible.

Sushi Masato: a planned meal rather than an impulse stop

Sushi Masato publishes a standard omakase at THB4,000++ and a premium option at THB6,000++. Its own questions-and-answers page makes two important points: there is no fixed menu or guaranteed course count, and the premium version adds ingredients according to the chef's selection and availability. [6]

That means the useful question is not whether the expensive version gives a particular number of extra pieces. It is whether you value the additional premium ingredients enough to pay the difference. Someone new to the format may be better served by enjoying the standard course attentively than upgrading automatically.

The restaurant distinguishes its traditional first-floor counter from the third-floor Raw Bar counter. Its published explanation says the ingredients are the same each day, while the chefs and settings differ. Choose the booking intentionally rather than assuming every reservation delivers an identical seat and presentation. [6]

The listed prices carry "++," so they are not net totals. Ask for the all-in amount and cancellation conditions in the booking confirmation; do not compare THB4,000++ directly with an inclusive casual meal price. For two diners, THB8,000 is only the combined base price of two standard courses, before those additions and drinks.

Timing matters as much as the menu. The restaurant publishes specific omakase sittings, and its visitor information describes a fifteen-minute grace period before it contacts late guests and may cancel an unanswered reservation. Build a transport buffer into the evening instead of scheduling another attraction immediately before the meal. [7] [8]

The Raw Bar's broader walk-in possibility is not the same as a guaranteed omakase counter reservation. Similarly, takeaway sets listed on the website are separate products, not evidence that the full restaurant experience costs the takeaway price.

Which meal is worth your money?

Choose Sushiro when you want inexpensive variety and an adjustable order. Choose Isao when inventive rolls and a casual shared meal are the point. Choose Sushi Masato when you want to devote both time and budget to the chef's sequence rather than select individual favorites.

For a traveler spending several days in Bangkok, the most satisfying comparison may be two different formats on different days. A controlled-spend lunch and one considered special dinner tell you more than repeatedly stretching a casual bill toward luxury prices.

Finally, communicate ingredient restrictions before committing to a fixed course. A chef-led meal is not the right place to reveal a long list of exclusions after the food arrives. The best booking is one the restaurant can accommodate comfortably and you can enjoy without negotiating every plate.

Source and editor notes

Selection is based on published menus and formats, not firsthand tasting. Isao prices come from its official merchant-ordering listing and are not claimed as dine-in totals; directory opening hours were inconsistent. Sushi Masato's ++ pricing and counter distinctions are retained rather than flattened into one headline price.
