For a budget stay in Bangkok, choose a room near the transport you will actually use rather than the cheapest pin on the map. National Stadium suits a short, shopping-heavy visit; On Nut offers a different location trade-off; and the Lumpini side of Sathorn is worth comparing for a private room. Judge the total stay cost, not the advertised nightly rate.
Three practical examples illustrate those choices: Lub d Bangkok Siam beside National Stadium BTS, HOP INN Bangkok Onnut Station near On Nut BTS, and ibis Bangkok Sathorn, which advertises a shuttle to MRT Lumpini. These are location-based suggestions, not a claim that one property is the cheapest on every date. 123
Start with two days of your itinerary
Before searching accommodation, put your first two sightseeing days on a map. A temple-focused trip, a shopping weekend and a visit organised around friends in eastern Bangkok need different bases. Make the journeys from each prospective hotel, including the walk to the station. The word "central" is too vague to settle that question.
Also map your arrival. A very cheap bed loses some appeal when a late flight requires a separate transfer and the property has limited reception. Ask for the late-arrival procedure in writing, including what happens if the flight is delayed. A confirmed booking is not the same as a confirmed way to enter the building at night.
Keep the number of hotel moves low on a short trip. Saving a small amount on one night can require packing, luggage storage and another check-in. For three nights, I would normally choose one workable base and spend the saved time exploring, unless the final night's airport arrangements create a clear advantage.
National Stadium: spend more on location, less on complexity
Lub d Bangkok Siam's own booking information places it beside National Stadium BTS and lists a four-bed shared-room option. This makes it a useful starting point for a solo traveller comparing a dormitory with more private accommodation around Siam. Select the exact room category rather than assuming every room uses the same bathroom arrangement. 1
My recommendation is to shortlist this area when easy orientation matters more than finding the lowest possible room price. For a first visit with a short stay, removing uncertainty from the hotel-to-station journey has value. You can test that value against alternatives instead of treating a central address as an automatic luxury.
A dormitory decision should be about sleep as much as money. Ask about locker dimensions, curtains, bathroom access and whether a towel is included. A large suitcase may not fit the storage shown in a photograph. Travelling with valuables also changes how useful a lockable compartment will be.
Couples should compare the price of two beds with the price of one private room. A low per-person headline can disguise a higher joint bill. Enter both travellers into the booking form before comparing totals, and do not mistake a shared twin room for exclusive use of an entire dorm.
On Nut: a reasonable base when the station walk is short
HOP INN Bangkok Onnut Station says it is approximately 260 metres from On Nut BTS. It also identifies Lotus's, Century The Movie Plaza and Habito Mall among nearby facilities. That is a concrete location proposition, rather than an unspecified "Sukhumvit" address. 2
The question is whether that base fits your daily journeys. Price the room against a more central alternative, then consider how often you expect to return during the day. A traveller who leaves after breakfast and comes back after dinner can accept a different commute from someone needing an afternoon rest.
Do not expand the recommendation to every property described as On Nut. Two hotels in the same district can have substantially different approaches to the station. Trace the actual pedestrian route and look at the entrance, not just the distance between map pins. Ask about stairs when luggage or mobility makes them consequential.
This is also a sensible area to investigate for a longer stay, but a weekly discount is not enough by itself. Check laundry arrangements, workspace and noise exposure. Ask the property which room category offers the features you need, rather than relying on photographs of a more expensive room.
Sathorn near Lumpini: compare a conventional private room
Accor lists ibis Bangkok Sathorn on Soi Ngam Duphli, with superior double and twin rooms of 19 square metres. The property places MRT Lumpini about 800 metres away and advertises a free shuttle to it. Treat the published ten-minute walk as the hotel's estimate, not a guaranteed luggage-carrying time. 3
This option is worth comparing when a private bathroom and a standard hotel setup matter more than a hostel's social spaces. Before booking around the shuttle, ask for its actual service arrangements. "Free shuttle" does not necessarily mean a vehicle leaves whenever your train arrives.
Read the bed description carefully. A booking system may display maximum occupancy without explaining how an additional guest sleeps. For three travellers, get the bedding configuration and supplement in writing. The cheapest room that technically accepts three people may not be the most comfortable allocation of your budget.
For any hotel near a large road, inspect the crossing needed to reach transport. An attractive distance figure does not describe every part of the route. This matters particularly when you expect several station walks a day.
Calculate the room price and the trip price separately
Use a small comparison rather than a citywide average. Suppose, purely as an example, two dorm beds cost THB 700 each per night, while a private room costs THB 1,600. Over three nights, the dorm total is THB 4,200 and the private room total is THB 4,800: a difference of THB 600, or THB 100 per person per night. These are illustrative figures, not quoted rates at the named properties.
That calculation makes the decision clearer. Privacy might be worth the difference; a solo traveller has a completely different comparison. Add any breakfast, towel, luggage-storage or payment charges shown in the actual offer. Keep refundable and non-refundable rates in separate columns.
Then add transport that the accommodation choice creates. Do not count every journey as an extra cost of the cheaper hotel: some would happen from either base. Compare only the difference between realistic itineraries, using current journey prices for your route.
Arrival timing can be more important than a small discount
Both HOP INN's property information and ibis Bangkok Sathorn list check-in from 14:00 and checkout by noon. An early-morning arrival does not therefore establish a right to immediate room access. 23
When sleep after an overnight flight is essential, compare guaranteed early access with booking the previous night and notifying the hotel. Ask how the reservation will be protected against being treated as a no-show. For a late departure, compare luggage storage with paid late checkout rather than automatically buying another night.
Finally, choose the booking whose conditions you understand. The useful bargain is the room with an acceptable journey, suitable sleeping arrangements and a total you can afford. A slightly higher rate can be the better budget decision when it removes a cost or inconvenience you would otherwise pay for repeatedly.
