The simplest way to top up a Rabbit card is at a supported station ticket office, using the physical card and checking the new balance before leaving. Machines and My Rabbit can also help, but the app has an important extra step: after paying for a card-purse top-up, you must tap the card to the phone again to write the value. 1
For a visitor, reliability matters more than choosing the most digital method. A counter top-up that takes one clear transaction is often preferable to setting up unfamiliar banking and identity links while standing outside the gates.
Add a sensible amount at a station
Rabbit's published top-up guidance describes additions in multiples of THB 100, up to a maximum stored balance of THB 4,000. BTS lists ticket offices and supported automatic machines among top-up channels. Select an amount that covers your next likely journeys rather than automatically loading the maximum. 21
For example, a card with THB 70 remaining and a THB 200 addition should show THB 270 afterwards. This is a balance calculation, not a prediction of how many journeys that amount will buy. Actual fares depend on the route and product used.
Take the card out of its holder so that staff or the machine can read it clearly. Confirm whether the transaction adds ordinary stored value or purchases a particular trip package. Those are different products, even if both are associated with Rabbit.
Keep the receipt until you have checked the updated balance. If there is a discrepancy, it is easier to address it at the same counter with the transaction details available than after several subsequent journeys.
A station top-up does not make the card valid on transport systems that do not accept it. Loading more money will not resolve a Blue Line MRT gate rejecting a Rabbit card; that is a payment-system mismatch, not an insufficient-balance problem. 34
Machines are useful, but follow the machine in front of you
BTS's current Thai guidance includes automatic ticket machines as a top-up channel. Older instructions saying that Rabbit can only be topped up at a staffed counter are therefore too broad. However, do not infer that every machine accepts every payment method or offers an identical interface. 1
Choose the top-up function and read the screen before inserting cash or selecting another payment option. If you cannot see the relevant function, use the ticket office rather than experimenting with a single-journey ticket purchase.
Keep the card in the position required until the machine confirms completion. Removing it prematurely can leave uncertainty about whether payment was taken and whether the card value was updated.
If the machine shows an error, note the machine location, approximate time and any receipt or reference number. Ask station staff before repeating the payment. The aim is to resolve the original transaction, not create a second one whose relationship to the first is unclear.
Carry an alternative way to buy your immediate journey. A top-up problem should not force you to miss a timed booking when a valid single ticket is available.
My Rabbit has two separate payment ideas
My Rabbit can handle a card's stored-value purse and a linked Rabbit Wallet. Those terms are not interchangeable. Rabbit's own FAQ distinguishes their uses and the way funds are managed. Know which balance you are adding to before authorising payment. 5
For an ordinary card-purse top-up through the app, the process involves reading the card, choosing the amount and supported banking channel, completing payment, returning to My Rabbit and tapping the card again. That final contact transfers the value to the physical card. A successful bank notification alone does not complete every stage. 1
Rabbit explains the two taps explicitly: the first reads the card; the second writes the purchased value after the banking transaction. This is the most important troubleshooting detail when money appears to have left a bank account but the physical card still shows the old balance. 5
The app requires a compatible NFC-enabled phone. Its published payment channels involve participating mobile-banking services. Visitors should not assume that a foreign bank card can simply be entered as it might be on a travel-booking website. 4
A linked wallet may work differently from an ordinary card-purse top-up. Follow the instructions for the product you actually set up, rather than combining half of one procedure with half of another.
Registration can be the real obstacle
Foreign users are instructed to verify their Rabbit identity at a BTS ticket office using a passport before using My Rabbit. The app is not a way to bypass that requirement. Make the identity step during a convenient station visit, not just before a train you urgently need. 5
The account and registered card must also correspond. Rabbit's FAQ explains that linking somebody else's card to your own account is restricted. A couple sharing one phone should not assume that every family member's card can be managed under one identity without checking the rules. 5
For a short holiday, consider whether app setup is worth it. If you only need one or two top-ups, using a counter can be the simpler solution. The app becomes more attractive when you will use the system regularly and already have compatible banking access.
Do not give a stranger control of your banking application to finish the process. Station staff can help with the transport product, but passwords, authorisation codes and bank access should remain private.
Diagnose the problem before adding more money
When a gate rejects the card, first distinguish four possibilities: insufficient stored value, an unfinished top-up, an incompatible line, or a card/account problem. Each needs a different response.
An unfinished app transaction calls for checking the app's completion steps and card balance. A payment-system mismatch calls for the correct ticket. A damaged or unreadable card needs staff assistance. Repeatedly adding money is not a universal repair.
For a card that has not been used for a long time, BTS distinguishes the life of the stored value from the physical card's expiry. Its published guidance says value has a two-year activity-related period that can be renewed by top-up, provided the card itself remains within its validity. Ask staff to inspect an old card rather than assuming it is permanently useless. 1
Keep the balance modest near the end of your stay. Stored value is money committed to that product; it is not automatically refunded to the bank account used for your holiday. Read the actual refund conditions instead of assuming a counter will reverse every unused amount.
The best routine is simple: top up before the balance becomes urgent, check the resulting amount, retain the card through entry and exit, and use the app only when its registration and payment requirements genuinely suit you. That turns Rabbit into a convenience rather than another system to troubleshoot.
