A Bangkok to Chiang Mai road trip is worth planning when the places between the two cities are part of the holiday. For a first journey, I recommend several days with overnight stops rather than treating temple visits as breaks in one long drive. Choose either a history-focused route or a faster transfer; do not pretend they are the same itinerary.

Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Lampang offer distinct reasons to stop. The advantage of a car is the ability to spend time in those places, not simply to reproduce a train or flight journey with more driving.

Build the route around overnight stays

My suggested four-day framework is Bangkok to Ayutthaya, onward to Sukhothai, then Lampang, and finally Chiang Mai. This is an editorial itinerary, not an official timetable or a claim that each leg has the same driving burden.

The first day is deliberately modest. Ayutthaya is about 86 kilometres north of Bangkok according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and its historical sites extend across and around the old island city. Treat it as a destination rather than promising a complete visit in a short motorway break. 1

The next stage deserves a proper travel day. Put your Sukhothai accommodation into the route planner before choosing additional stops, and decide whether you want to sleep near the historical park or in the modern town. Those choices change the final approach and the following morning.

Use Lampang as a final overnight when you want a slower journey. Travellers with less time could remove that overnight, but should then reduce sightseeing rather than keeping every stop and extending the day into the night.

Do not add a detour merely because it appears on a map of northern Thailand. A worthwhile place can still be the wrong stop for this route. Keep a separate list of optional visits and drop them when driving, weather or fatigue uses more time than expected.

Ayutthaya: choose a compact historical introduction

Ayutthaya's appeal is the concentration of temple ruins and the relationship between them and the surrounding waterways. UNESCO recognises the historic city, while the tourism authority also highlights local food, including river prawns and the sweet known as roti sai mai. 12

For a first afternoon, choose two or three sites that you genuinely want to understand. Park once where practical and allow time to walk around rather than spending the whole visit moving the car. Do not assume one entrance ticket covers every separately managed monument.

A guide can add context if you would otherwise see only a succession of brick towers. Alternatively, select a smaller number of sites and read about them before arriving. Both approaches are more rewarding than a rushed checklist.

Stay overnight when the temples are a priority. That lets you separate the Bangkok departure from the next substantial drive and avoids making the first day's success depend on an unusually easy exit from the capital.

Sukhothai: give the historical park its own session

Sukhothai is not merely another name for the Ayutthaya experience. UNESCO's inscription covers Sukhothai and associated historic towns and describes the development of a distinctive architectural tradition in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. 3

The useful planning decision is whether you want a brief introduction or a deeper historical stop. For a brief visit, concentrate on the main park area. For a deeper one, spend an extra night rather than adding every associated site to a single driving day.

My recommendation is to arrive, settle in and reserve the main sightseeing session for a period when you are not already exhausted from the road. An early visit may suit your schedule, but consult the actual opening arrangements for the areas you intend to enter.

Ask the accommodation about bicycle access, secure parking and the distance to the entrance you will use. A hotel described as "Sukhothai" is not automatically within easy walking distance of the ruins. Check the map location rather than relying on the city label.

Lampang and Lamphun: select one final focus

The tourism authority's northern itinerary gives Lampang and Lamphun separate days. It includes Lampang's Ratchadapisek Bridge and Kat Kong Ta, then Lamphun's Wat Phra That Hariphunchai and other heritage sites. That is useful evidence that these places deserve time, not instructions to squeeze its entire programme into your last transfer. 4

For an overnight in Lampang, favour a manageable town visit and a relaxed meal. For a daytime stop nearer Chiang Mai, choose one Lamphun attraction and leave space for the final drive, hotel check-in and car return.

Keep mountainous sightseeing around Chiang Mai for a separate day unless it is the central purpose of the journey. Finishing a long northbound trip and immediately adding another demanding drive can undermine the flexibility you rented the car to gain.

If the group is divided, agree on the final stop before departing. One person's essential temple and another's coffee break can become several hours when combined with parking and meals.

Rental costs: the return location changes the calculation

Request the complete price for collecting the car in Bangkok and returning it in Chiang Mai. A daily rate alone does not establish the cost of a one-way trip. Ask about the return branch, opening hours, one-way charge, deposit, insurance excess and any restrictions on additional drivers.

Also decide whether you need the car after reaching Chiang Mai. Keeping it while spending several days on foot can add rental and parking costs without adding much value. Returning it immediately requires a route that ends at the correct branch, not simply at your hotel.

Here is a hypothetical fuel calculation: if your selected itinerary totals 800 kilometres and the car averages 14 kilometres per litre, you would use about 57 litres. At an assumed THB 35 per litre, that is roughly THB 2,000. Neither the distance nor fuel price is a live quotation; replace both with your actual route and current pump price.

Add tolls, parking and overnight accommodation separately. Compare the total with a flight or rail journey plus local transport, rather than comparing fuel alone with an airfare.

Driver eligibility and a sensible fallback

Thailand's official guidance recognises valid Thai licences, valid international driving permits and licences from ASEAN member countries as eligible categories. The correct documentation still depends on your licence and vehicle, so confirm your position with the responsible authority and the rental company before paying. 5

A rental desk handing over a vehicle is not a substitute for checking insurance conditions. Ensure every intended driver is named where required and understands the excess and roadside-assistance procedure.

Build the driving days around your own experience and rest needs. Do not use a navigation estimate as a guaranteed arrival time, and avoid making the last booking of the day impossible to change.

Choose another form of transport when the main goal is simply reaching Chiang Mai. The road trip earns its place when you have time for the stops, enjoy driving and can organise the rental properly. Otherwise, preserve those days for the north rather than spending them on a journey you did not actually want.
